I was on a flight from Chicago yesterday when I got the news … entrepreneurial legend, Steve Jobs, had died.

I informed the flight attendant and then, like wild fire, everyone was tuning into their televisions and mourning the loss of this great man.

A man they never knew….

But, what was so great about Steve Jobs and why did this loss affect so many people on a personal level?

The answer: Steve Jobs made his work at Apple a personal endeavor.

You see, most people fall in love with their product … Steve fell in love with his customers!

He made sure that everything – from the storefront, product and packaging – delivered an experience.

He brought passion to the purchase!

And, he let us know that we, the customers, were important to him.

Great service is one thing … knowing that we matter is another.

That’s the difference between PC users and Apple fans.

He had a tribe.  A raving fan base. A world-wide group of supporters who were just as supportive of Steve as he was about them.

Rather than these monstrous companies focusing on arbitrage, stock prices, balance sheet manipulation or, heck, even political endorsements – Steve kept is eye on the customer.

It never appeared to be about money for Steve … and, we loved him for that.

Just hearing the words, “I love my customers” isn’t good enough … your customers have to see it, feel it and truly believe it … because actions speak louder than words.
